Media portrayal is not always what it seems when it comes to the viewers idea of what a certain job entails.  Movies and television can sometimes make a night club career or job look exciting and alluring when it is in fact tiring and stressful.  The viewers, whether it be by choice or ignorance, only see the glamorous side of many stories.

A good example of this false portrayal by the media is bartending.  Bartending is just a small part of a big picture in the restaurant business. A bartender is a person who makes drinks and obviously it does require skill to do this.  Different types of establishments require different levels of interactions with the public as well.

An elegant type restaurant employs a bartender who will probably not have much contact with the customers. A casual type setting employs a bartender that may interact fully with the customers.  Restaurants and clubs have different focuses, one being food and one being drinks.  If a bartender does deal with the public directly he/she can make great tips by giving his/her best customer service which is required when working in the service industry.

When opening your own restaurant you should always think of ways of keeping a great reputation and ways to be successful.  A big part of this reputation and your success are the employees you hire at your restaurant.  All the hiring needs to be done before your restaurant opens and how many employees you do hire depends on the size of the restaurant and the hours it will be open to the public as well as how many job positions there are.  Try to hire dependable employees who will work their hardest for you.

Always try to find dedicated and responsible employees.  Offer them a decent wage and some helpful benefits.  An employee’s happiness in their job usual reflects in their work. If you treat your employees fairly, you will have happy, devoted workers and it will reflect onto your successful business.

Before you open your restaurant, you need to advertise in either the newspaper or online classifieds. Always mention in your ad what special skills you need from a working and what type of work habits you expect from them. He/she needs to enjoy working with the public, responsible and able to get along well with others.  This will weed out many of the applicants and then you can further screen them for these qualities at an interview.
